Aside from terrific value and customer service, do you offer customers who bring referrals to your business anything special for those referrals? It is important to always reward customer referrals. Most people wonder, “What’s in it for me?” when it comes to promoting someone else’s business. That’s why you have to make referring your business worth it to them. Gifts, closed door sales, special events or even discounts are all ways to keep the referrals coming.

Strategy Number 3: Form Strategic Business Alliances- Partnering with other businesses that aren’t in direct competition with you is one of the easiest ways to grow your salons customer base. For example you could form an alliance with other beauty related retailers. Such as clothing stores, shoe shops. What about aligning with a jewelry shop or even a local gym?

Consider your business and other businesses that share your views and philosophies, but sell a different product. How could access to their customers grow your business? Customers trust businesses that have shown their loyalty and will be inclined to follow their recommendations. When you build strong alliances with other businesses that share your philosophy, you create a win-win situation for everyone involved, including the customer.

Strategy Number 4: Build a Trained and Skilled Workforce- A team that is empowered and has a sense of ownership can boost your customer base dramatically.

Remember, your team comes into contact with people both in and out of work every day. Every one of those interactions can be a marketing opportunity for your salon or spa business. Your responsibility is to teach your team the skills they need to promote your business to everybody they come in contact with.

To do this, your team needs your attention, guidance, and training. And don’t forget about your team’s bottom line either. They will need to be incentivized to do the job properly. Lesson # 3: Start Capturing Your Clients Email Addresses!

Just because email marketing is an online system, it doesn’t mean that you need to have a Salon or Spa website.  All you need to do (start right now!) is ask for their email address in the basic contact information you collect from them when they first visit your salon or spa.

You don’t need to have a website to start emailing your clients. It’s easier and far more effective if you do, but don’t let it stop you collecting them in other ways.

If you do have a salon / spa website then make sure you have an “opt-in” form on your website. This is a place where they are asked to enter their email address which will automatically assign them to your autoresponder at the time they enter their details. They will then automatically get emails from your autoresponder helping you convert them from prospect to paying client.

How do you get your website visitor to opt in to your autoresponder. Easy… you bribe them… but you do it ethically.

The easiest way is by offering an opt-in subscription to some kind of publication or free bonus. To get the bonus, they have to give you their email address.

Lesson # 4: Your List Is Your Goldmine!

Read that title again… “your list is your goldmine”! I’m continually amazed at how few Salon & Spa owners truly understand that.

Here’s the reason why I say that.

Most Salon & Spas gear all their marketing to gaining a NEW client. They spend very little on trying to get their existing clients back into their Salon or Spa on a more regular basis.

Think about it… how much do you spend on marketing to get a new client as opposed to the amount you spend on getting your existing clients back into your business more often and getting them to spend more money on your services.

I bet it’s “skewed” towards the new clients!

OK, what can you do about it. Simple… make your existing clients a great offer, not a good offer… I mean a great offer. How about $350 worth of value for only $147, saving them a huge amount. Now email it out to your list.

Total cost of advertising… probably close to Zero, result… even at one sale you will make money! How often do you get a return on investment that good?

Of course there’s a little bit more to it than that… how do you email it, how do you automate it, how can you create a system that repeatedly gets great results.

The trick is to learn how to use email marketing effectively… the rewards in greater profits for your Salon could be massive.

Lesson # 5: Avoid The Danger Of Email Marketing!

Dangers of salon email marketingYour online business could be taken away from you tomorrow… That’s right… email marketing could kill your business and you would lose everything!

You may have spent years building a responsive money making list of prospects and spent hundreds of hours building an automated email marketing system.

You could lose your autoresponder system, your complete online list… without you having any say in it at all.

How? It’s called spamming. No doubt you’ve heard that term before. It’s sending out emails to people who have not requested it.

Successful email marketing is all about “permission based” contact. That is, you only send out emails to those people who have requested your information… and who have subscribed voluntarily to your online list.

Lesson # 6: How To Write “Magnetically Charged” Emails!

If you send them an offer, you want them to buy. That’s pretty logical isn’t it? But all too often, that doesn’t seem to happen.

I’ve reviewed many email offers that Salon & Spa owners have sent out. And many have the same basic mistakes that cause prospects NOT to respond.

There’s a number of essential steps you should follow when writing emails. Each one is designed to improve your sales. Get them all right and you could make massive sales from your email offer.

Let me cover one of those steps right here…

It’s creating a sense of urgency and/or scarcity. Here’s what you do. You create a great offer then email it out to your list. The strategy is to limit the offer to only the first 17 respondents… the offer is that good that you can only afford to give away 17 packages.

You could add the urgency by stating that the offer is only available for the next 3 days or until the 17 packages are sold.

It’s very effective in getting your prospect to act quickly… and results in more sales.

So what about the other steps. Later on I will refer you to a great resource that has them all laid out for you… but for now I just wanted to introduce you to the idea that a great email that is designed to sell can easily be created.

Is Email Marketing the only thing you should be doing to build your Salon / Spa business? That’s easy… NO it’s not!

It is just ONE of the things you should be doing!

However, email marketing is a strategy that can be automated and, once you have set it up, requires very little input from you to manage.

But let me tell you what typically happens. You create a client list, build it up from online sources (website) and “offline” (clients who walk in to your business and provide their email address)… and then you start emailing them.

You finally realize that you need a good e-mail list for your salon. Perhaps after reading countless articles and sought expert advices and have read many success stories of salon owners filling their stations using e-mail marketing for their salons you finally decide to have one of your own. Then it happens, you think you have known everything there is to know about an e-mail lists and have followed all the advice you have recived to the letter and you still weren’t able to fill those empty chairs.

In fact, you may have even lost money in the process. You maybe hiring writers to help you out, or there are some expenses incurred, even if you have a big list, but only a very small percentage actually picks up the phone and books an appointment.

So what could have gone wrong? Why have others succeeded where you have failed? The most common mistake is that you dived straight in.  Just because you send an e-mail out to  people from your list doesn’t mean they are going to instantly flood your salon or spa.

Here I will offer more advice, for those who have started building an e-mail list and are not seeing the results, you can rejuvenate your failed venture. For those who are starting, here are three quick and easy ways to build a profitable e-mail list.

1) Get your customers to trust you and your products first. Just launching your e-mail list and begin selling right off the bat is bad idea and would not make you a believable seller. You first need to develop a rapport with your readers. Deliver value first before trying to sell.  Value can be delivered in giving away helpful hints and tip.  For example seasonal advice is always welcome.  How to keep your hair looking great in the summer sun and themes of that nature.  Put many articles out there before you start the selling process.

Provide expert advices and recommendations. When you feel that people trust you already, you will be able to start selling to your readership more effectively. Friends are always good customers. Put up a link to your site in your mailings  so that people may be able to see what you’re business is all about.

The certain truth is, the money will only come in when the consumers and subscribers believe and trust in you. They want a product or service that could be a good exchange for their money. People are not going to buy something out of your recommendation if they feel they don’t know you.

2) Focus on an “In Demand” product or service whats hot right now in the market. It maybe a new look or new conditioner, nail product if you do that in your salon.  Find out what your customers want and give it to them. Although it may not be your forte, if you provide a service and product that you have researched and learned about well, you can carry it on forward. Invest your time, effort and money that you could sell as well as the buyers or subscribers of your e-mail  list can use.

While it is true that it is best to sell something that you have interest in, there are not many people who have the same interest as you if you decide to sell something that is not entirely popular or profitable. Do your research well and you would see the profits come in. Also provide your subscribers with promotional material that they could actually use and spread around.

3) Make friends with other e-mail list users. This is basically beneficial especially if it is someone who has already launched a successful opt-in list. These are people that have the experience in this venture and experience is still the best teacher. While there are many articles available for you in the internet to use, there is nothing like getting a first hand account from someone you trust.

Experienced e-mail list users will be able to tell you what to do and what not to do because they have gone through it. While different situations occur for different people, the general concept can still be very helpful. There are many things to avoid and these people will be able to tell you which ones.

When someone walks into your salon or spa they expect a great, cut, style, colour, massage. These are the Essentials. This is doing what you do properly. So while focusing on delivering this is important, often times its not what will really stimulate word of mouth marketing for your business.

Providing unexpected services is terrific customer service. Doing what every one else does is simply expected and therefore does not have any real impact on your customers.

Customers respond to so much more than just the product/service you provide. It may be the offer of a cup of tea, clean, well-presented and smiling staff, regular thank you cards, acknowledging a customer’s birthday or something bigger such as an annual fashion show hosted by you where all of your regulars are invited.

It is important to implement a system to train front line people to give expert service, but it is even more important that the system encourages and allows warmth and bonding with customers.

Customers need to believe they are cared for, even if only a little and customers will return to places where they feel cared for. CNE’s will give that feeling to your customers and get them talking about you and your business.

So you want a business that survives and thrives even in lean times then Here is the prescription for profitability and security: Focus on your existing clients and how you can be of “better” and/or “greater” service to them. So just invest 30 minutes a day, everyday thinking about how you might be of better and greater service to your clients. If you do the “Word of Mouth” leads will flow and your business will grow.
